Falco cooperi was named by Bonaparte (1828). It is extant.

It was recombined as Accipiter cooperi by Hay (1930), Schultz and Howard (1935), Broughton (2004); it was recombined as Accipiter cooperii by Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Clements et al. (2017).
