Palaeomolgophis was named by Brough and Brough (1967). It is not extant. Its type is Palaeomolgophis scoticus.

It was assigned to Molgophidae by Brough and Brough (1967); and to Adelogyrinidae by Carroll (1988), Carroll et al. (1998).
