Kuehneosauridae was named by Romer (1966). Its type is Kuehneosaurus.
It was assigned to Prolacertilia by Kuhn (1966); to Neodiapsida by Benton (1985); to Eolacertilia by Robinson (1967), Seiffert (1975), Estes (1983), Carroll (1988); to Lepidosauromorpha by Gauthier et al. (1989); and to Lepidosauriformes by Evans (2009).
