Taxonomy
Parasaniwa was named by Gilmore (1928). Its type is Parasaniwa wyomingensis. It is the type genus of Parasaniwidae.
It was assigned to Saniwinae by Hay (1930) and McDowell and Bogert (1954); to Varanidae by Gilmore (1928) and Hecht (1959); to Parasaniwidae by Estes (1964) and Estes and Berberian (1970); to Necrosauridae by Estes (1983), Carroll (1988), Bryant (1989) and Gao and Fox (1996); and to Platynota by Conrad (2006) and Longrich et al. (2012).
