Platyognathus was named by Young (1944). It is the type genus of Platyognathidae.
It was assigned to Pseudosuchia by Young (1951); to Pseudosuchia by Young (1944), Charig (1967); to Pedeticosauridae by Walker (1970); to Platyognathidae by Simmons (1965), Carroll (1988); to Protosuchia by Wu and Sues (1996); and to Crocodyliformes by Luo and Wu (1994), Irmis et al. (2013).
