Necrosuchus was named by Simpson (1937). Its type is Necrosuchus ionensis.
It was assigned to Crocodylidae by Carroll (1988); to Caimaninae by Brochu (2010), Brochu (2011), Pinheiro et al. (2013), Bona et al. (2018), Cidade et al. (2020); and to Jacarea by Rio and Mannion (2021).
