Albertosaurus was named by Osborn (1905). It was considered monophyletic by Currie (2000).

It was synonymized subjectively with Aublysodon by Romer (1956), Parsch (1963); it was synonymized subjectively with Deinodon by Tatarinov (1964).

H. F. Osborn 1905Reduced alveolar partitions between the mandibular teeth; . . . principal alveolar grooves apparently formed on the inner surface of the outer dentary wall with little or no development of grooves on the alveolar plate (Lambe, op. cit., p. i6)." The mandibular ramus is devoid of the triangular osseous plates between the teeth. The anterior truncate teeth are reduced to a single small pair.
