Taxonomy
Sinognathus was named by Young (1959). Its type is Sinognathus gracilis. It was considered monophyletic by Gao et al. (2010).

It was assigned to Cynosuchidae by Young (1959); to Trirachodontidae by Carroll (1988), Li and Sun (2008); and to Sinognathinae by Gao et al. (2010).
