Thylamys was named by Gray (1843). It is extant. It is the type genus of Thylamyinae.
It was assigned to Thylamyini by Patton et al. (1996); to Marmosini by Goin (1997), Goin (1997); and to Didelphidae by Carroll (1988), Salles et al. (2006).
