Taxonomy
Thylacosmilus was named by Riggs (1933). It is not extant. Its type is Thylacosmilus atrox. It is the type genus of Thylacosmilidae. It was considered monophyletic by Suarez et al. (2023).
It was assigned to Thylacosmilinae by Riggs (1933); to Thylacosmilinae by Engelman et al. (2020); and to Thylacosmilidae by de Muizon (1994), McKenna and Bell (1997), de Muizon (1999), Forasiepi et al. (2019), Suarez et al. (2023).
