Cimolestes was named by Marsh (1889). Its type is Cimolestes incisus. It is the type genus of Cimolestidae.
It was assigned to Didelphiidae by Simpson (1927) and Simpson (1929); to Cimolestinae by Hay (1930); to Palaeoryctidae by Sloan and Van Valen (1965) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (1979); to Didelphodontinae by Van Valen (1967), Gheerbrant (1992) and Gheerbrant et al. (1998); and to Cimolestidae by Marsh (1889), Hay (1902), McKenna and Bell (1997), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004), Lopatin (2006), Wible et al. (2007), Wible et al. (2009), Williamson et al. (2011) and Fox (2015).
