Catagonus was named by Ameghino (1904).
It was assigned to Suidae by Ameghino (1904); to Tayassuinae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Wright (1998), Boisserie et al. (2005); to Tayassuidae by Carroll (1988), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008), Gasparini (2013); and to Tayassuini by Dutra et al. (2017).
