Stegotherium was named by Ameghino (1887). It is not extant. Its type is Stegotherium tessellatum. It is the type genus of Stegotheridae.
It was assigned to Stegotheridae by Ameghino (1889), Ameghino (1894); to Dasypodidae by Carroll (1988), Kramarz et al. (2010); and to Stegotheriini by McKenna and Bell (1997), Gonzalez and Scillato-Yané (2009), Carlini et al. (2010).
