Ammonites linguiferus was named by d'Orbigny (1846). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.R04121 and is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Polyplectites.
It was recombined as Polyplectites linguiferus by Enay et al. (1994); it was recombined as Cadomites linguiferus by Zatoń (2010); it was recombined as Cadomites (Polyplectites) linguiferus by Martin (2017).
