Fordillidae was named by Pojeta (1975) [m. kosnik taxon no: 5020]. It was considered paraphyletic by Carter et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Fordilloida by Pojeta (1975) and Vokes (1980); to Mytiloida by Elicki (1994); to Bivalvia by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Fordilloidea by Nevesskaja (2009) and Carter et al. (2011).
