Taxonomy
Oreasteridae was named by Fisher (1911). It is extant. Its type is Oreaster. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (1987) and Mah and Blake (2012).

It was assigned to Granulosina by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Tripedicellaria by Gale (2011); and to Valvatida by Gale (1987), Blake (1989) and Mah and Blake (2012).
