Taxonomy
Protoconus was named by Yü (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1006]. It is not extant. Its type is Protoconus crestatus.

It was assigned to Cyrtonellida by Sepkoski (2002); to Igarkiellidae by Parkhaev (2002) and Parkhaev and Demidenko (2010); to Mollusca by Kouchinsky et al. (2017); and to Carinopeltidae by Wagner (2023).

Anterior field evenly convex. Posterior field short and concave. Aperture widely oval. Mid-dorsal buttress distinct, separated from rest of shell surface by prominent furrows."
