Taxonomy
Protoconus was named by Yü (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1006]. It is not extant. Its type is Protoconus crestatus.

It was assigned to Cyrtonellida by Sepkoski (2002); to Igarkiellidae by Parkhaev (2002) and Parkhaev and Demidenko (2010); and to Carinopeltidae by Wagner (2017).
