Eopteria was named by Billings (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Trep-u O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 542]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Eopterioidea.
It was assigned to Rostroconchia by Pojeta et al. (1972); to Conocardioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Eopteriidae by Miller (1889), Pojeta and Runnegar (1976), Bouchet et al. (2010).
