Taxonomy
Marginella avena was named by Kiener (1834). It is extant.

It was recombined as Volvarina avena by Hinds (1844), Woodring (1970) and Ward and Blackwelder (1987); it was recombined as Marginella (Volvarina) avena by Woodring (1928); it was recombined as Hyalina avenacea by Portell et al. (1992).
