Erato vulcania was named by Marwick (1926) [TYPE LOCALITY: Lorne, N. Otago (Kaiatan - E. Priabonian).]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lorne, which is in a Kaiatan marine tuff in the Waiareka tuff Formation of New Zealand.
It was recombined as Proterato vulcania by Fleming (1966); it was recombined as Lachryma vulcania by Beu et al. (1990).
