Margarites was named by Gray (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Tropitidae by Smith (1927); to Trochidae by Zinsmeister (1983); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Margaritinae by Woodring (1957), Bouchet et al. (2005) and Rosenberg (2005).
