Puncturella was named by Lowe (1827) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 794]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Emarginulinae by Knight et al. (1960) and Abbott (1974); to Emarginulidae by Wilson (1993); to Fissurellidae by Ladd (1982) and Todd (2001); and to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
