Propalaehoplophorus was named by Ameghino (1887).

It was assigned to Hoplophoridae by Ameghino (1889); to Glyptodontidae by Ameghino (1887), Lydekker (1894), Scott (1903), Brown (1912), Carroll (1988); to Propalaehoplophorinae by Hoffstetter (1958), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Propalaehoplophoridae by Ameghino (1891), Ameghino (1894), Fernicola (2008).
