Taxonomy
Murex canaliculatus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene-Recent; Massachusetts-Florida.]. It is extant. Its type specimen is LS 555, a shell.
It was recombined as Busycon canaliculatum by Holmes (1858), Abbott (1954), Richards (1962), Spencer and Campbell (1987); it was recombined as Busycon (Busycotypus) canaliculatum by Wenz (1943) and Hollister (1958); it was recombined as Busycotypus canaliculatus by Hendy et al. (2008).
