Ampullinopsis was named by Conrad (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l T Mi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 547,909]. Its type is Natica mississippiensis.

It was reranked as Ampullina (Ampullinopsis) by Cooke (1919) and Ladd (1977); it was reranked as Globularia (Ampullinopsis) by Karagiuleva (1964) and Iqbal (1973).
