Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | "shale" |
Secondary lithology: | mudstone |
Lithology description: "The vertical sequence of fossil associations can be related to a sequence of sedimentary facies all dominated by shales and mudstones belonging to an open shelf environment. The last phase of the Ordovician/Silurian glacio-eustatic transgression took place while the initial beds of the Solvik Formation were deposited, producing a deep shelf environment...These interpretations are mainly based on frequency, thickness and structures in storm-associated silt and fine sandstone interbeds which occur throughout the formation...The fossils...normally occur scattered all through the sediment and at variable angles to the bedding...Valves are most often disarticulated but fragmentation and orientation are seldom seen...I regard these assemblages as essentially untransported or `disturbed neighborhood assemblages' (Scott 1974) with the exception of some samples from the Leangen Member...[Transport is only local]." | |
