Stratigraphy
Formation: | Turtel Mountain | Member: | Goodlands
Local section: | WP-9 | Local bed: | 62 cm
Stratigraphy comments: Sample height in section estimated from Figure 4.
Sediments from the Goodlands Member were assigned to the early Palaeocene, and two biozones - lower Wodehouseia fimbriata and upper Tricolporopollenites kruschii - were identified (Braman and Sweet, 1999). |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | black,brown coal |
Includes fossils? | Y |
Lithology description: 54 cm thick dark to brown to black lignitic coal.
Environment: | mire/swamp |
Geology comments: A forested mire with angiosperms grew in the vicinity during deposition. Warm-adapted plants flourished in a near-shore transient terrestrial swamp environment dominated by angiosperms and conifers, that was analogous to modern swamps of the southern United States. They were deposited in coastal environments as the Western Interior seaway retreated. |
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation: | body,original sporopollenin |
Size of fossils: | microfossils |
Temporal resolution: | time-averaged |
Spatial resolution: | allochthonous |
Collection methods and comments
Collection excludes: | some microfossils |
Collection methods: | bulk,chemical,hydroflouric,field collection |
Collection size: | 515 individuals |
Reason for describing collection: | paleoecologic analysis |
Museum repositories: | GSC | Collection dates: | September 2007 |
Collection method comments: Samples were processed at the palynology lab of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), Calgary, Alberta. Briefly, material was macerated and subjected to acid digestion to remove organic matter, carbonates and silicates. Resulting slurries were stained using Safranin ‘O’ and mounted with liquid bioplastic.
They are stored in collections at GSC, Calgary.
Taxonomic list comments:Non-pollen palynomorphs were not identified or counted. |
