Lithology and environment

Secondary lithology: | shelly/skeletal grainstone
Includes fossils? | Y | ||
Includes fossils? | Y | ||
Lithology description: "Rather similar [environment] to that of the Upper Osgood Shale Holocystitid-Coronoid Association, but with relatively less available hard substrate and greater susceptibility to current action. The lithology ranges between a bryozoan boundstone and skeletal grainstone, with skeletal packstone (marlstone) fabrics being especially common. Small masses (to 18 cm diam.) of micritic, relatively structureless algal limestone occur locally. The surrounding sediment is a calcareous, slightly silty shale with relatively rare skeletal debris (Middle Osgood Shale), an argillaceous limestone (skeletal wackestone: part of the Middle Osgood Limestone and lower Laurel Lst), or fine-grained dolomite, also with only rare skeletal grains (Romeo Mbr)."
Environment: | deep subtidal indet. | Tectonic setting: | cratonic basin |
Geology comments: generally good preservation of echinoderms noted; holdfasts; biostromes and thickets; localized winnowed units; trilobites and bryozoans fragmented; "This is one of the few Midwest Silurian echinoderm associations which occur in both carbonate and argillaceous carbonate dominated facies. The community appears to have been subject to wave or current action periodically, but not continuously, i.e. was subject to effects from more than just very major storms...most likely BA 4 to outer BA 3."
