Geography
Country:Colombia State/province:Bolivar
Coordinates: 10.4° North, 75.5° West (view map)
Paleocoordinates:9.8° North, 72.9° West
Basis of coordinate:based on nearby landmark
Geographic resolution:local area
Time
Period:Neogene Epoch:Miocene
10 m.y. bin:Cenozoic 5
Key time interval:Middle Miocene
Age range of interval:15.98000 - 11.63000 m.y. ago
Stratigraphy
Local section:Esperanza
Regional section:Bolivar
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: Middle Miocene age based on correlation with other Caribbean fossil assemblages and by stratigraphic relations. Thickness in the Zambrano-Carmen section may be as much as 5,000 ft. Fossils are stratigraphically lower than those from Jesus del Monte.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: unlithified sandstone
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: Sandstone. Unlithified based on observation of figured specimens.
Environment:coastal indet.
Geology comments: No paleonenvironmental data reported, though from apparently from shallow-water siliciclastic sediments. Rocks dip to the SE monoclinally away from the older sediments forming the folds of the central range of hills. From strike ridge of sandstone.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Preservation of anatomical detail:good
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:field collection
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Museum repositories:PRI
Collection method comments: Collections reposited at Cornell University (now PRI collections). Many collections collected by C.C. Anderson.
Taxonomic list comments:Some lists appear exhaustive, though in cases nomenclature is antiquated, though at species resolution.
