Stratigraphy
Formation: | Kurchavinskaya
Local section: | Kruzhilikha River
Regional section: | October Revolution Island
Stratigraphic resolution: | bed
Stratigraphy comments: STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: Cambrian Kurchavinskaya Fm is overlain unconformably by the Kruzhilikha Fm. Stratigraphy is described in more detail by Makarev et al. (1981) and Bogolepova et al. (2001). THICKNESS: 100 m to 250 m in thickness locally. AGE: Iverian. Correlated to the Protopeltura praecursor Biozone of the standard Baltic sequence. The upper part of the Kurchavinskaya Formation has been previously corelated with the upper half of the upper Cambrian, equivalent to most of the Iverian and the Payntonian stages of the Australian succession. The present series of collections contain taxa (e.g. P. holtedahli) that indicate correlation with the Ketyi horizon, and hence correlation into late Iverian of Australia. |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | lithified argillaceous sandstone |
Includes fossils? | Y |
Lithology description: SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Dark colored argillaceous sandstones. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, based on age and observation of figured specimens.

Collection methods and comments
Collection methods: | surface (float),field collection |
Reason for describing collection: | taxonomic analysis |
Collection method comments: COLLECTORS: Collected by D.G. Gee and V.L. Pease, during Swedarctic International Expedition of 1999. REPOSITORY: PMU (Museum of Evolution, Uppsala University, Sweden). SOURCE OF MATERIAL: Colleced from scree blocks.
Taxonomic list comments:COMPLETENESS: Exhaustive, depauperate fauna, but including representatives of trilobita, brachiopoda, and echinodermata. NOMENCLATURE: Authoritative publication, though no taxa are actually newly or re-described, with modern nomenclature by specialists and species-level assignments. |
