Stratigraphy
Formation:Mahantango Member:Upper Shale
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: calcareous "shale"
Environment:marine indet.
Geology comments: "Shale and claystone, in part calcareous (some Ls concretions). deeper and further from clastic source than Chaneyville Env.- Quiet. BA4. *The Mohantango is thought to represent a regressive-transgressive package. Culmination of the regression is believed to be during Montebello time (see attached summary of strat. relationships). In all cases, regressive shales (e.g., Gander Run) contain a less diverse fossil biota than transgressive shales (e.g., Upper Shale and Frame) although they are thought (by Ellison) to represent similar depositional regimes. I have recorded the data for a transgressive shale, the Upper Shale Mbr. at Perry Co. This was the most diverse fossil assemblage of those listed in the appendix."
