Key time interval:Early/Lower Cenomanian
Age range of interval:100.50000 - 93.90000 m.y. ago
Stratigraphy
Formation:Eggardon Grit
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Eggardon Grit, which overlies the glauconitic sand and chert beds of the Upper Greensand, and is overlain by the basal phosphatic conglomerate of the Lower Chalk (Late Cenomanian). AGE: Early Cenomanian, on the basis of ammonite biostratigraphy. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: Upper 2.5 m of the formation, immediately below the contact with the brown glauconitic chalk.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:very coarse,concretionary,shelly/skeletal lithified sandstone
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Hard, coarse and nodular grit, becoming softer below. Weathers to a coarse sand. Shell fragments and calcite fossils are common.. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, based on facies description.
Environment:coastal indet.
Geology comments: COMMENTS: Shallow marine siliciclastic setting.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body,cast,mold/impression,original calcite
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:bulk,field collection
Reason for describing collection:biostratigraphic analysis
Collection method comments: COLLECTOR: W. J. Kennedy. REPOSITORY: Unknown, probably the BMNH.
Taxonomic list comments:COVERAGE: Exhaustive for ammonoidea, bivalvia, gastropoda, and other macrofossils. NOMENCLATURE: Not an authoritative publication and with somewhat antiquated nomenclature. Ammonoidea generally identified to species resolution while bivalves, gastropods and other macrofossils may not.
