Lithology description: The 1.5 m fossiliferous interval consists of three units: lower sandstone. middle limestone, and upper mudstone. The lower unit, very fine grained calcareous sandstone, is mottled grayish orange on the weathered surface and yellowish gray on the fresh surface. Its thickness varies between 15 and 20 cm. The sandstone is massive and porous. It contains indistinct burrows and micritic fecal (?) pellets. The pellets occur both as scattered individuals and as clusters. The elongated pellets range from 1.5 to 3.0 mm in length. Sand grains are subangular to angular. The upper surface of this unit exhibits scaphopods, pelecypods, and gastropods. | |
Environment: | lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal |
Geology comments: Highly restricted, shallow, possibly hypersaline marine environment. |
