Stratigraphy comments: Lower Mudstone Member- Thickness 2-25m. There are no surface exposures of this member, although upper beds have been reached in the excavations of the "Drumgossat" mine. The basal contact is usually sharp.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:gray calcareous mudstone
Secondary lithology: carbonaceous "shale"
Lithology description: The member consists of grey mudstones, shales and laminated siltstones, occaisionally slightly calcareous. Small macroscopic plant remains are relatively common. Towards the top of this member interbedded thin gypsum laminae are present in several cores.
