Stratigraphy
Geological group: | New Red Sandstone | Formation: | Kingscourt Gypsum | Member: | Lower Gypsum |
Local section: | Drumgossat mine, boringsT29 T43 IGS | Local bed: | g
Local order: | bottom to top
Stratigraphic resolution: | group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: Thickness 20-35 m. The Lower Mudstonen Member passes transsitionally upwards, by the incoming of thicker gypsum bands, into the Lower Gypsum Member which is actively exploited in the "Drumgossat" mine. |
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: | gray argillaceous evaporite
Secondary lithology: | "shale"
Includes fossils? | Y | ||
Lithology description: The gypsum is white or grey and in places it contains variable amounts of argilliaceous sediment. This locally results in a rhytmic banding of the evaporites. The upper part of the member is marked by the incoming of red sediment matter in place of the earlier grey coloured detritus. Samples of the intercalated shales and shaly gypsums frequently yield an appreciable palynomorph content. Rare macroscopic plant remains have also been noted.
Environment: | marine indet. | Tectonic setting: | foreland basin |
