Geography
Country:United States State/province:Nevada County:Elko
Coordinates: 40.8° North, 115.7° West (view map)
Paleocoordinates:48.8° North, 96.3° West (Wright 2013)
Basis of coordinate:based on nearby landmark
Geographic resolution:outcrop
Time
Period: Paleogene Epoch: Eocene
10 m.y. bin: Cenozoic 2-3
Key time interval: Early Uintan
Age range of interval: 46.2 - 39.7 m.y. ago
Age estimate: maximum 46.1 ± 0.1 Ma (U/Pb)
Stratigraphy
Formation:Elko
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: "tentatively assigned to the Uintan Land Mammal Age" based on a zircon U-Pb date of 46.1 +/- 0.1 Ma for a tuff in the underlying lower member; a much younger U-Pb date of 38.9 +/- 0.3 Ma applies to the "topmost part" of the much higher upper member and is therefore not very relevant
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: lithified sandy "limestone"
Lithology description: "thin, decimeter-scale beds of sandy limestone near the base" of the informal middle member
Environment:lacustrine deltaic indet.
Geology comments: "a lacustrine, carbonate flat environment of relatively shallow depth, most likely less than 10 m" proximal to "a clastic point source along the lake margin" and within "a broad, low-lying area"
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body,adpression
Size of fossils:macrofossils,mesofossils
