Stratigraphy
Formation:Bajo de Veliz Member:Pallero
Stratigraphy comments: The fossil plants include species of the Gangamopteris biozone and their content corresponds to the Lubeckense flora that corresponds to the Carboniferous–Permian boundary. The palynoflora suggested different age such as Permian (Sakmarian; Menéndez 1971) or earliest Permian (Gutiérrez & Césari 2000). Radiometric dating of other correlated units (e.g. La Colina, La Rioja Province) brings a middle Stephanian age (295 ± 6 Ma, Late Carboniferous; Archangelsky et al. 1995). Correlated with the Patquia Formation, which is as old as mid-Moscovian at its base.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:gray silty siltstone
Includes fossils?Y
Environment:"floodplain" Tectonic setting:pull-apart basin
Geology comments: Paganzo basin; fault-controlled subsidence formed small half-grabens and pull-apart basins that subsided intermittently in a series of rapid spurts. Strongly resemble transtensional pull-apart basins of strike-slip zones.
