Geography
Country:Brazil State/province:Piaui
Coordinates: 8.9° South, 42.6° West (view map)
Paleocoordinates:
Basis of coordinate:stated in text
Geographic resolution:small collection
Time
Period: Quaternary Epoch: Pleistocene
Stage: Late Pleistocene 10 m.y. bin: Cenozoic 6
Key time interval: Late Pleistocene
Age range of interval: 0.129 - 0.0117 m.y. ago
Age estimate: 10020 ± 290 YBP (14C)
Stratigraphy
Stratigraphy comments: Kerber et al. 2016: Absolute ages from this locality include 14C on charcoal (10,020 ^ 290 years BP) and AMS on human teeth (12,170 ^ 40 years BP, 15,245 – 14,690 calibrated years) (Guidon et al. 2000; Peyre et al. 2009). Some datings by thermoluminescence and OSL were carried out, but they showed conflicting results (Felice 2006). More details from the Toca do Gordo do Garrincho site are available in Peyre et al. (1998, 2009), Guidon et al. (2000) and Felice (2006).
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: argillaceous sandstone
Secondary lithology: lithified gravel
Lithology description: Guerin et al.1993: Il s'agit cl'une grotte creusée clans un petit affleurement calcaire de même nature que pour les gisements précédents (carte Congo à 1/100.000), située à la base du massif, en contact avec le pédiment.
Environment:cave
Geology comments: megafauna is from argillaceous sands and cemented gravels: see Peyre et al. 1998
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Articulated whole bodies:some
Disassociated major elements:some
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:selective quarrying
Collection size:1500 specimens
Reason for describing collection:general faunal/floral analysis
Collection method comments: specimen count is approximate; earlier figure of 170 given by Guerin was based on preliminary excavations
Taxonomic list comments:numerous additional identifications of Peyre et al. 1998 derive from much later collections
