Stratigraphy
Geological group:Karoo Formation:Omingonde
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: Referred to as the "Lower Etjo Beds" by Keyser (1973) but now called the Omingonde Formation. "Based on the co-occurrence of Kannemeyeria and Erythrosuchus in subzone B of the Cynognathus Assemblage Zone, the Omingonde Formation may be broadly assigned an Anisian age." (Damiani et al. 2007. Palaeontology 50: 1531-1546)

Abdala & Smith (2009) suggest the possibility of two different faunas in the upper Omingonde Formation; an older one corresponding to Cynognathus Subzone B and the upper possibly to Cynognathus Subzone C. On the basis of the presence of Chiniquodon in the upper fauna, Abdala & Smith (2009) tentatively suggested that the Omingonde could extend into the early Ladinian. Dolichuranus was suggested by Abdala & Smith (2009) to come from the older fauna, and would therefore be early Anisian in age.
