Stratigraphy
Formation:Protopivka
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: According to palaeobotanical data (Stanislavski 1976), the upper part of the Protopivka Formation (containing the so-called 'Garazhovka flora') is dated to the upper Norian, based on the facts that it lies directly below the Novorayskaya Formation (which is attributed to the Rhaetian) and that the 'Garazhovka flora' is younger than the Carnian floras of western Europe. Dobrusskina (1982) agreed with these conclusions, but noted that according to the new data on the correlation of the Norian and Rhaetian stratotypes, the so-called Rhaetian flora began to form in the middle Norian (Dobrusskina 1977a) and therefore the upper part of the Protopivka Formation (Dobrusskina 1977b) corresponds rather to the lower Norian or upper Carnian.
