Stratigraphy
Geological group:Lower Ditton
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: 60 m above the main Psammosteus limestone horizon.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:green sandstone
Secondary lithology: sandstone
Includes fossils?Y
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: At certain horizons near the top of fining-upwards sequences, bedding planes of buff to green, micaceous , fine-grained sandstones are covered with fragmentary plant remains. Larger axes of Prototaxites/Nematasketum occur in the coarser, massive sandstones.
Environment:fluvial indet.
Geology comments: sediments are typical of distal alluvial facies of the Old Red Sandstone (Edwards & Fanning, 1985)
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:adpression,permineralized,coalified,original carbon,original sporopollenin,replaced with pyrite
Size of fossils:macrofossils,mesofossils,microfossils
Spatial orientation:random
Preservation of anatomical detail:variable
Disassociated minor elements:many
Fragmentation:frequent
Temporal resolution:snapshot
Spatial resolution:allochthonous
Collection methods and comments
Collection methods:chemical, mechanical, peel or thin section, field collection
Reason for describing collection:taxonomic analysis
Collection method comments: Lang, 1937 only described Cooksonia; D. Edwards recollected later, but does not indicate how many times. All names except C. hemisphaerica, Parka, and Nematothallus were from the later Edwards' collection(s).
Taxonomic list comments:Taken from multiple sources.
