Age range of interval: 15.98 - 13.82 m.y. ago
Stratigraphy
Formation:Chikubetsu
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: Lower member of the Chikubetsu Formation. The so-called Chikubetsu-Onishibetsu horizon is correlated to the Denticulopsis lauta Zone by diatom biostratigraphy (Maruyama, 1981). Based upon these data, the geologic age of the Chikubetsu Formation is assigned to the early Middle Miocene.

Primary lithology:massive,bioturbation lithified sandstone
Lithology description: Intensely bioturbated, massive sandstone
Environment:transition zone/lower shoreface
Geology comments: Lower shoreface to inner shelf. Sandy bottom of an upper neritic zone.
