Stratigraphy
Formation:Fujina
Stratigraphic resolution:group of beds
Stratigraphy comments: Based on planktonic foraminifera, the upper member of the Fujina (=Huzina) Formation is assigned to N10-11 of Blow's zones (14.6/14.8-12.4 Ma) (Nomura & Maiya, 1984). Age constrained to N11 planktonic foraminifera zone by Yanagisawa (1990). Base of overlying Matsue Formation dated around 11.5-11.9 Ma by Shikano & Nagano (1985).
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: lithified siltstone
Environment:submarine fan
Geology comments: The nearly-exclusively siltstone lithology (with very occasional thin fine sandstone beds) suggests an environment no shallower than offshore. The lower Fujina was described as outer neritic on the basis of benthic foraminifera by Tai (1955), but those units are typically glauconitic sandstones. The upper Fujina may also be offshore, but an upper slope environment is perhaps more likely. The ostracod assemblages from the upper lower member to the upper member are similar to modern assemblages from upper slope environments in the Sea of Japan (Tanaka et al., 2002).
