| Stratigraphy comments: The Meinohama Sandstone (or Formation, or Group) is correlative with the Kishima Group and the lowest part of the Ashiya Group. The Ashiya Group corresponds to Zones P21-"N4" of Blow's scale of planktonic foraminifera (Saito & Okada, 1984; Tsuchi et al., 1987) and Zones CP18-CP19b of calcareous nannoplankton (Okada & Bukry, 1980). The fission track age of the bottom of the Yamaga Formation is about 32 Ma (Ozaki & Hamasaki, 1991). Okada (1992) showed that the Yamaga and Sakamizu Formations were assigned to Zone CP19a (latest Rupelian-early Chattian) of calcareous nannoplankton. Miyachi & Sakai (1991) obtained fission track ages of 33.9 Ma for the Sari Formation, the second-lowest in the Kishima Group, consistent with nannoplankton biostratigraphy suggesting a CP16a zone for the underlying Kishima Formation (Okada, 1992). Together, the evidence suggests a Rupelian age for the Meinohama Group. | |||||

| Geology comments: The roughly-correlative Yamaga Formation includes a range of environments from offshore, offshore-transition, and tide-influenced shoreface (Tomita & Oji, 2010). Similarly, the Kishima and Karatsu Formations to the south include offshore and offshore-transition environments (Yamaguchi et al., 2006). Without sedimentological information from the Meinohama site itself, assigning an environment more specific than "coastal" will not be possible. | |
