Stratigraphy comments: The Dainichi Formation is in the uppermost part of the CN12 nannofossil zone (N21 planktonic foram Blow zone), according to Tomida et al. (2006). Formerly assigned to the Late Pliocene, but should be assigned to the Gelasian (circa 2.0 Ma) after revision of the Plio-Pleistocene boundary.
