Stratigraphy
| Geological group: | Sakishima | Formation: | Ryukyu Limestone | ||
| Local section: | F-449 | ||||
| Regional section: | Ryukyu | ||||
| Stratigraphic resolution: | bed | ||||
| Stratigraphy comments: The Ryukyu Limestone unconformably overlies rocks of the Ishigaki Group, the Miyara Formation, the Nosoko Formation, and the Omoto Granite. Two principal lithologies are present - a stratified sandy limestone, and a massive coralliferous limestone. Conglomeratic limestone is common at th base of the formation | |||||
Lithology and environment
| Primary lithology: | planar lamination,brown,yellow poorly lithified sandy,calcareous "limestone" |
| Secondary lithology: | fine,shelly/skeletal lithified calcareous "limestone" |
| Includes fossils? | Y |
| Includes fossils? | Y |
| Lithology description: The sandy foraminiferal limestone consists of sand sized particles loosely to formly cemented together by calcium carbonate. It is white, light tan or cream. The coralliferous limestone is mostly a well lithified, bioclastic, recrystallized limestone composed of tests or fragments of forams, pieces of corals, pieces of algae, and other types of fossils in a groundmass of fine calcareous organic debris. | |
| Environment: | carbonate indet. |
Taphonomy
| Modes of preservation: | body,mold/impression |
| Size of fossils: | macrofossils |
Collection methods and comments
| Collection excludes: | all microfossils,some macrofossils |
| Collection methods: | selective quarrying,field collection |
| Reason for describing collection: | taxonomic analysis |
| Museum repositories: | USNM |
| Collection method comments: Probably reposited in USGS and USNM collections | |
| Taxonomic list comments:Representative of mollusca. Identified by F.S. MacNeil (mollusca). Corals excluded from list (too many) | |
