Gallina, level 3 (Pleistocene of Italy)

Where: Italy (38.1° N, 15.7° E: paleocoordinates 38.0° N, 15.6° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Calabrian (1.8 - 0.8 Ma)

• The species Hyalinea baltica is present, whereas Globorotalia truncatulinoides is absent, indicating a Early Calabrian age.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal sandstone

• The relative abundance of planktonic foraminifers (as compared to benthic taxa) is 36%. According to Wright (1978) this figure points to a circalittoral environment (some 200 m in depth).
• Sands rich in Terebratula scillae. The pelitic content increases upward. Poorly lithified based on sampling methods and fossil preservation.

Size class: macrofossils
