Amama 2 (Miocene of Algeria)

When: Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 5.3 Ma)

• Terrestrial sequence begins with a thick gypsum bed (60 meters) which progresses into blue clays with sandstone lenses. The fossil locality is located near the top of the section in blue clays and is covered by a sandstone bed several meters thick.

Environment/lithology: fluvial-lacustrine; poorly lithified, fine-grained, blue claystone and poorly lithified sandstone

• Located approximately 50 meters above Amama 1 locality. Micromammals come from blue clays, large mammals from overlying sandstones. Dating is imprecise but the locality is estimated to be between 7-8 Ma.
• Micromammals come from blue clays rich in the remains of molluscs. This horizon is covered by sandstones several meters thick.
