Torrente Meduna sample 12 (Miocene of Italy)

Also known as Venus-Conus community sample 12

Where: Pordenone, Italy (46.2° N, 12.8° E: paleocoordinates 45.8° N, 12.5° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Torrente Meduna Siltstone Formation, Serravallian (13.8 - 11.6 Ma)

• Miocene Torento-Meduna sequence unconformably overlies the Eocene Clauzetto Flysch (Flysch di Clauzetto) and is composed of Preplans Sandstone, Zouf marl, Rugo Mizza Sandstone, San Martino Calcarenite, Torrente Meduna Siltstone, Maraldi Sandstone, Bier Puddingstone, and Montello Conglomerate. Thickness of the San Martino Calcarenite is approximately 450 m. Sample 12 is from the upper part of the Torrente Meduna.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; brown, gray siltstone

• "The formaniferal assemblages point toward a Serravallian age".
• Torrente Meduna Siltstone "poorly bedded grey-brown siltstone, locally with intercalations of silty sand".

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: bulk,

• Based on single bulk samples, about 30 cubic centimetres each. Grain size data also provided.
