Stratigraphy
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: On Santiago, fossiliferous calcarenites are associated with the Orgãos Formation and the Pico da Antónia Complex, and the described area north of Tarrafal is mapped as the latter. According to Johnson et al. (2012), the Flamengos Formation, which underlies the Orgãos Formation, represents an early phase of shield building, entirely submarine, constrained to dates between 3.9 and 4.6 Ma. The Pico da Antónia Eruptive Complex denotes a subsequent, mostly subaerial shield-building phase. This complex includes a lower member composed of thick pillow lavas dated as old as 3.25 ± 0.05 Ma and an upper member with both subaqueous and subaerial flows dated not younger than 2.19 ± 0.12 Ma. If the tooth comes from the Pico da Antónia, which is the mapped unit in the vicinity, this would indicate a Late Pliocene-Early Pleistocene age for the tooth (unless reworked).
